Research table: Elacestrant (Orserdu) for metastatic breast cancer treatment

Introduction: Selective estrogen receptor degraders (SERDs) are a type of hormone therapy. These anti-estrogen drugs bind to the estrogen receptor in a tumor cell. They cause the receptor to be broken down by the cell.

Some SERDs are in pill form (taken orally).

The oral SERD elacestrant (Orserdu) is used to treat hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancers that have an ESR1 tumor gene mutation and have been treated with hormone therapy in the metastatic setting. (The ESR1 mutation is in the genes of the breast cancer cells, not the genes of the person.)

All hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancers should be tested for ESR1 tumor gene mutations.

Study selection criteria: Randomized clinical trials with 100 or more participants with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer that had an ESR1 tumor gene mutation.
