Each year more than 100 Affiliates across the U.S. fund over a thousand community-based programs that address barriers and needs related to breast cancer. These local programs aim to change behaviors and increase access to early detection and quality treatment. In order to ensure we’re funding programs that address the specific unmet needs of their communities, our Affiliates work with local medical experts and community leaders to conduct comprehensive community needs assessments. These community profiles are then used to establish local grant application and review processes consistent with Komen's standards and mission. Through thoughtful and strategic partnerships and coalition building, our Affiliates work to provide the community with seamless access to breast health services from education, screening, diagnosis and treatment programs, as well as survivor and co-survivor support.
Through the Komen Affiliates, we strive to:
Thanks to supporters like you, the Affiliate Grants Program provided grants totaling more than $57 million to over 1,200 nonprofit organizations in FY14. These programs include life-saving education as well as services tailored to the needs of the community. For instance, rural areas have benefitted from mobile mammography units that provide free mammograms to women unable to access medical facilities for their annual screenings. Community members needing bilingual education are offered brochures and instruction in breast self-awareness in their native languages. And women with little or no health insurance are able to complete their breast cancer treatment through Affiliate Grants Programs. In a single year, our Komen Affiliate Community Grants:
Once the needs in the community have been identified in the Community Profile, the Affiliate can make well-informed decisions about where to invest the Grants Program money. These decisions drive the creation of “funding priorities” to ensure resources and programs reach the individuals or “target communities” most impacted by breast cancer. These funding priorities are incorporated in the Affiliate’s Grants Program Request for Applications (RFA). The RFA provides an overview of which communities, groups or populations, and needs the Affiliate has prioritized. Grants are awarded through a highly-competitive application process. An independent panel of local experts reviews the applications for impact, feasibility, sustainability and other selection criteria designed to ensure that only the best programs are funded. Once the grants are made, they are carefully managed by staff and volunteers to ensure that funds are applied effectively and leveraged for maximum impact. Throughout the year, both Affiliate and Grantee staff work closely together in assuring high quality breast health services are available, while ensuring the funding priorities identified in the Community Profile are truly responding to the target communities breast health needs.
