• Susan G. Komen for the Cure® “Perfect Pink Party“ Raises Over $1 Million To Support Breast Cancer Programs


    Autographed Tim Tebow Helmet Highlights Auction for the Cure at Gala Event Featuring Gov. Rick Scott and Civic Leaders 


    PALM BEACH, FL – January 15, 2012 – The Susan G. Komen for the Cure 2nd annual “Perfect Pink Party" brought together Florida’s most influential civic leaders on Saturday night at the historic Mar-a-Lago Club to honor and the support the critical work of Komen for the Cure, the global leader in the fight against breast cancer.  


    The Perfect Pink Party is Komen’s first major event in 2012, a year that marks the organization’s 30th year of leadership in the movement to find cures and end suffering from breast cancer, worldwide. 


    Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, Komen’s founder and CEO and a Palm Beach resident, joined Donald and Melania Trump and Florida Gov. Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott for an evening of dining, dancing and an auction. Y100 radio Miami host and regular of E!’s “Chelsea Lately” Michael Yo served as the night’s emcee. Music was provided by the Peter Graves Orchestra.  


    “Yes, we fund more science and research than anyone outside the U.S. government, and yes, we are the first and only organization fighting in state capitals and Washington DC to preserve lifesaving programs through our advocacy effort,” Brinker said in her speech. “But our core mission is saving lives, and everything we do – from science to care--goes to support this highest of virtues.” 


    The evening’s event raised more than $1 million to support Komen’s work in national research, with a quarter of it staying in the South Florida area. 


    Gov. Scott gave remarks touching on the ability of one person to make a difference. 


    “This is what’s great about America: One person can start something and it can have such a dramatic impact on the world,” remarked Gov. Scott. “I just can’t imagine anybody who’s had a bigger impact in people’s individual lives than Nancy Brinker.”  


    Additional funds from the evening came in part from the auctioning of luxury items by the night’s leading auction contributors Flexjet, Giorgio Armani Boutique Palm Beach, One More Toy, Seabourn and Wynn Properties. Trump helped add an extra $10,000 when he surprised guests by donating to the auction four tickets to see Celine Dion at Mar-a-Lago in February. 


    In a special treat, Denver Broncos and former University of Florida Gator quarterback Tim Tebow donated an autographed helmet, which was won by Trump just moments after telling the press he had hoped for a Patriots win over the Broncos in that evening’s playoff game.  


    The Perfect Pink Party followed Friday evening’s pink lighting of the Royal Park Bridge connecting West Palm Beach and Palm Beach. The bridge will remain lit in the signature color in the fight against breast cancer until the end of the month.  


    Brinker served as the gala chairwoman alongside founding chairwoman Patty Myura. U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and Grace Nelson. Gov. and Mrs. Scott were the evening’s honorary chairs. Cynthia Friedman and Nicki and Ira Harris co-chaired the event and Trump served as the New York Ambassador.    


    The event raises funds and awareness for Komen’s work in thousands of communities and in more than 50 countries. The organization Brinker founded has grown since 1982 to become the world’s largest and most influential breast cancer organization, funding almost $2 billion to research and community outreach programs worldwide. 


    Komen’s $685 million research investment, the largest of any non-profit organization outside of the U.S. government, has helped deliver more accurate screening technologies, more personalized treatments and breakthroughs in understanding the disease. It also has helped drive breast cancer mortality rates down by 31 percent since 1991, and improve relative five-year survival rates for early stage breast cancer from 74 percent in 1982 to 99 percent today.  


    Komen also funds an extensive global network of community partners providing real-time help for women worldwide.  With $1.3 billion in community funding, Komen has helped reach millions of women with education and screening, treatment and aftercare programs.  Last year alone, Komen and its 123 Affiliates paid for 700,000 breast screenings for poor and uninsured women in the U.S., and provided social and financial support to another 100,000 women and their families. 


    Locally, Komen’s South Florida Affiliate has provided more than $16 million to local breast cancer and women’s health programs, funding nearly $1.5 million for local breast cancer programs in Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties last year alone.
