Basic FunctionThe Data Science Program Manager is a member of the Data Science & Impact team within Komen’s Mission division. The Data Science and Impact team supports Komen’s role as an evidence-based organization by transforming data into meaningful intelligence that will guide program strategy, convey Komen’s impact and facilitate the use of data to fuel scientific discoveries and improve breast cancer outcomes. The primary objective of the Data Science Program Manager is to support scientific programs within Komen’s Big Data For Breast Cancer (BD4BC) initiative designed to (1) empower the public with information and tools to make the sharing of health care data understandable and easy to do, (2) address challenges of incorporating big data applications into breast cancer research and clinical care and (3) use big data to fuel scientific discoveries and accelerate the delivery of equitable, patient-focused care.
Primary Responsibilities· Serves as a subject matter expert at the intersection of bioinformatics and breast cancer biology/oncology to provide guidance and thought leadership to partners, donors and internal/external stakeholders. · Leads scientific cross-disciplinary projects and initiatives (e.g., science reviews, think tanks) to convene key opinion leaders, explore critical issues related to the incorporation of data science into breast cancer research and care, and develop evidence-based strategies for the BD4BC initiative. · Manages the development and implementation of scientific events (hackathons) designed to facilitate collaboration between data scientists and breast cancer researchers, oncologists and patient advocates to address significant challenges in breast cancer research and care. Develops projects plans and budgets. · Applies strong program management skills to ensure timelines are being adhered to and projects are prioritized accordingly across the multiple programs. This includes coordinating ongoing communications internally and externally, as appropriate, to ensure everyone is aware of progress. · Manages the solicitation, receipt and review of proposals/applications in relation to the BD4BC initiative and ensures that scientific rigor is applied to all submitted applications/proposals. · Manage contracts, grants and sponsorships related to projects and programs in the BD4BC initiative. · Analyzes scientific data including clinical data and genomic/proteomic profiles and works with Komen’s evaluation team to assess the value and impact of BD4BC projects and programs. · Obtains and curates knowledge of other organizations’ scientific activities relevant to the BD4BC initiative, as well as community perspectives on emerging issues to help identify potential areas/opportunities for collaboration within the initiative. · Represents Komen and its BD4BC initiative externally, for example at partner meetings and teleconferences, and assists in donor cultivation activities, as needed. · All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience RequiredThe ideal candidate will have: · Doctoral Degree in Life Sciences and/or Data Science/Bioinformatics 2-5 years of directly related experience · Demonstrated experience in non-profit program management, breast cancer research, bioinformatics methods, health technologies or similar experience. · Demonstrated expertise in bioinformatics. · Knowledge of the technology industry, with an understanding of regulatory bodies that impact the use of health data and of technology in health care. · Ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and straightforward manner, while also considering interpretation of the written communication (same message may need to be tailored to different audiences, but the purpose of the message must remain consistent). · Active listening skills to ensure a full understanding of the situations are gathered for proper consistent feedback. · Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and proven ability to advance and drive tactics in a matrixed, global organization. · Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. · High degree of professionalism, maturity, executive presence, business understanding and confidentiality. · Candidate must have a willingness and ability to travel 25% of time.
Preferred Experience· Expertise in breast cancer research with publications history.
Specialized Knowledge Requirements· Intermediate level of computer/technical skills.
