    Job Description:

    Basic Function
    The Sr. Program Manager, African-American Health Equity Initiative (AAHEI). goal of the African American Health Equity Initiative (AAHEI) program is to reduce disparities in breast cancer outcomes within the African-American community by 25% within five years, starting in the 11 U.S. metropolitan areas where the inequities are greatest. These metropolitan areas include Memphis, St. Louis, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, the National Capital Region,Tidewater/Virginia Beach, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Baltimore.

    A Collective Impact model will guide the program. This model addresses complex social issues through long-term, cross-sector collaborative action and investment to maximize impact by creating community-driven systems change. The AAHEI program will employ several program methods including assessing quality and increasing improvement of care delivery; improving care coordination through oncology patient navigation and other means; and community advocacy.

    The primary objective of the Sr. Program Manager, AAHEI is to support Susan G. Komen in achieving our overall Vision and Mission by:

    • Ensuring effective implementation of the AAHEI collective impact model in metropolitan areas targeted by AAHEI.
    • Using community health expertise to implement evidence-based interventions in metropolitan areas targeted by AAHEI to address key drivers of breast cancer health disparities in African-Americans.
    • Ensuring continuous communication and relationship building among project partners, stakeholders, staff and National Steering Committee.
    • Providing supervision of the program implementation team and collaboration with AAHEI program development team, program evaluation team, and other Komen staff.
    • Promoting an organizational culture that values trust, commitment to the mission, scientific integrity, and professional and organizational growth. Development of performance measures, data management and implementation plan for above mentioned tools.

    Primary Responsibilities

     Ensures effective implementation of the collective impact model in metropolitan areas targeted by AAHEI

    • Establish and facilitate community cross-sectoral workgroups to implement AAHEI interventions; manages the coordination of workgroup activities to ensure alignment and achievement of project goals.
    • Identifies important coalitions, working groups, and other venues through which African-American health equity and/or AA breast cancer issues are discussed and ensures Komen has a seat at those tables.
    • Convenes project partners and key external stakeholders for annual project meeting; manages meeting logistics and collaborates with Komen meeting and events team.
    • Establishes processes, timeline, and goals for developing local relationships with Komen Affiliates or field offices, healthcare providers, organizations, community leaders, elected officials, and others serving the African-American breast cancer community.
    • Ensuring that all programs, services and grants are implemented and managed efficiently, effectively and professionally.
    • Partners closely with the Public Policy and Advocacy team to build relationships with local elected officials and uphold Komen’s advocacy priorities.

    Implements evidence-based interventions in metropolitan areas targeted by AAHEI to address key drivers of breast cancer health disparities in African-Americans:

    • Utilizes public health expertise to develop and implement a strategy for delivering program interventions to address the key drivers of breast cancer health disparities in African-Americans based on the findings of the AAHEI landscape analysis and applicable evidence-based public health interventions.
    • Provides technical assistance and training to community organizations, service providers, stakeholders and partners on evidence-based public health interventions.
    • Develops detailed project plans to monitor and track progress of intervention programs; measures project performance using appropriate tools and techniques.
    • Manages and implements strategies for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of AAHEI interventions by identifying bottlenecks in completing program activities and developing plans to minimize or eliminate them.
    • Works with Program Evaluation team to monitor all program interventions and trainings for progress towards achieving the program goals and indicators.
    • Works with the team to pilot training curricula; manages training logistics in collaboration with the Komen events team.
    • Works with Komen IT team and Program Development team to implement strategy for hosting and disseminating online and distance learning trainings.

    Ensures continuous communication and relationship building among project partners, stakeholders, staff and Steering Committee:

    • Manages and facilitates AAHEI project partners’ and stakeholders’ continuous communication and collaboration; establishes and monitors communication tools, such as Basecamp, to provide an effective communication mechanism for project participants.
    • Manages the development and dissemination AAHEI project newsletter, webinars, partner calls and meetings; ensures tracking of project participation and meeting minutes; responds to project information requests from project partners, stakeholders, and the public.

    Other Duties as Assigned.

    Management Responsibility:

    Supervises work of others, including planning, assigning and scheduling work, reviewing work and ensuring quality standards, training staff and overseeing their productivity. Provides coaching and program management oversight through one on one and team meetings. May offer recommendations for hiring, pay changes and termination, but does not have responsibility for making these decisions.

    Job Qualifications:

    Minimum Experience Required

    The ideal candidate must demonstrate:

    • Education or direct experience in support of health disparities programs, especially cancer disparities
    • Experience serving the African-American community
    • Strong supervisory skills especially in supervising remote staff.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills, be detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects and execute in a high-volume environment.
    • Proficiency in training, facilitation and providing technical assistance for public health interventions.
    • Ability to work both independently and with others to resolve issues and maintain composure and professionalism in an environment of changing and/or multiple priorities.
    • Must be able to work on a time table, meet deadlines, follow instructions and accept direction on given assignments.
    • Strong work ethic with the ability to maintain a high activity level.
    • Ability to communicate effectively both oral and written; research, develop, present, and
    promote projects; work independently; prioritize work and meet deadlines.
    • Strong public relations and interpersonal skills
    • Considerable knowledge of current literature, trends, and developments in the public health equity field.
    • Ability to assess the effectiveness of programs and make recommendations for improvements.
    • Ability to provide leadership and to supervise the planning, development and establishment of new programs.
    • Strong supervisory skills especially in supervising remote staff.
    • Experience as a public speaker, a team-oriented attitude for training others and a professional demeanor for interacting with stakeholders and program participants.
    • Must be able to work in the United States without employer sponsorship

    Work Experience: Minimum of 5-7 years of experience managing public health programs.

    Education: Minimum of Masters’ Degree in Public Health, health disparities, non-profit management or relevant discipline. Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for candidates with extensive experience demonstrating the qualifications described.

    Preferred Experience
    • Knowledge and/or experience in the collective impact program model
    • Knowledge and/or experience working with evidence-based intervention protocols
    • Experience working in a non-profit environment, especially on a national level

    Travel requirements. This position requires willingness and ability to travel at least 20% of the time locally and / or out of town
