    Job Description:

    Basic Function

    Provide scientific expertise to and oversight of Komen’s portfolio of research grants

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Manage Komen’s process of developing Requests for Applications and solicitation of scientific grant applications.
    • Oversee the peer review process and ensure scientific rigor is applied to all submitted applications, and appropriate support is provided to both applicants and reviewers.
    • Implement and oversee the grant contracting process and post award science management of funded research grants, which includes an active portfolio of over 250 projects totaling over $150 million.
    • Hire, manage, and coach a team of PhD-level scientific staff (Research Grants Managers). 
    • Provide accurate information to the Development, Marketing and Communications teams to support efforts to illustrate the importance and impact of the Komen Research Program in support of the Bold Goal.
    • Ensure that Komen’s principles of scientific excellence, fairness and transparency throughout the research process are achieved. 

    Job Qualifications:

    Minimum Experience Required

    • Doctorial Degree required
    • 4-8 years of management experience in peer-reviewed grant making or other scientific program development. 
    • At least 2 years of supervisory experience.
    • Ability to manage a large, complex workflow with multiple deadlines, data points, and priorities.
    • Highly developed administrative and organizational skills, and financial acumen. 
    • Excellent organizational and contract and project management skills required.
    • Demonstrated success coordinating information and data across multiple team members.  Excellent communication skills leading to exceptional team and cross departmental interactions as well as the ability to communicate scientific concepts to a lay audience (internal and external). Exceptional writing and speaking skills required.
    • Ability to prioritize and manage daily business dynamics. 
    • Shows positive approach to work, flexibility, cultural awareness, sensitivity to relationships, security, and confidentiality. 
    • Excellent and instinctive service and customer relationship skills. 

    Preferred Experience

    Breast cancer research background and publication history

    Five years of management experience in peer reviewed grant making, preferably in health research and/or scientific project management.

    Specialized Knowledge Requirements

    Knowledge of breast cancer research, the scientific and research process, and particularly research funding and grant-making operations.
