A family-owned company, Kent International, Inc.'s history dates back to the early 1900s when Abraham Kamler immigrated to the United States and found a job working for the owner of a bike shop in New York. During the process of restoring old bicycle frames, a love for cycling was born, and in 1909, he opened his own bike shop on the Lower East Side of New York City. This small bike shop led to a larger store in New Jersey where Philip Kamler, Abraham’s son, developed his own passion for the bicycle business. In 1947, Phil was inspired to start his own company — Philkam Cycle — supplying bicycles and bicycle parts to stores all over the Eastern U.S.
In 1958, the company changed its name to Kent International and, in 1972, Phillip’s son, Arnold Kamler, started working for the company. Arnold was named President of Kent International in 1976 and continues to run the company today.
Kent has been supplying bicycles and bicycle accessories to parents and their children across the nation for decades; and in 2011, Kent began partnering with Susan G. Komen to raise funds for Komen’s mission to end breast cancer forever through the sale of special bikes and helmets featuring the Komen logo and Running Ribbon.
Since 2011, Kent International, Inc. has partnered with Susan G. Komen® to create bikes and helmets featuring the Komen logo and Running Ribbon. The bikes and helmets are sold online and in retailers, like Walmart, nationwide. As part of its 2015 – 2017 program, Kent is donating to Komen$10 - $15 per bicycle and $2 per helmet. Kent will make a guaranteed minimum donation of $50,000 to Komen in each of 2015, 2016 and 2017.
