Komen Scholars

The Komen Scholars (formerly known as the Scientific Advisory Council or SAC) are an advisory group of 68 distinguished scholars and leaders in breast cancer research and advocacy who have made significant contributions to advancing the field or who demonstrate significant promise of leading the field with important advances in the future and are committed to furthering Komen’s mission.

This new group of scientific advisors was established in 2010 and is led by the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), which serves as the executive committee. Komen Scholars advise and provide expertise to Susan G. Komen for the Cure in a variety of capacities, with primary responsibility for leading and participating as reviewers in Komen’s scientific peer review process.  Komen Scholars also contribute in other ways to Komen’s mission-related programs, for example by presenting educational seminars and webinars; contributing to the development of educational materials; serving as representatives to the media/public; participating in the development of policy positions and other initiatives; serving as scientific advisors and participating in Komen-led think tank meetings and other Komen-sponsored programs; and collaborating with local Affiliates.

The Komen Scholars  are an international group—representing 39 institutions in Belgium, Canada, England, Israel, Italy, Switzerland, and the US—and span a wide range of expertise, including clinical research, laboratory research, pathology, prevention, radiation oncology, surgery, and other research disciplines and specialties.  Within the group there are 46 full members (established senior scholars and leaders in the field of breast cancer), 12 associate members (independent investigators at earlier stages of their careers), and 6 special members (individuals meeting criteria for full or associate membership who are PIs or Co-PIs on Komen Promise Grants or other large grants).  As researchers themselves, these 64 Scholars must be involved in innovative projects that seek to discover and deliver the cures for breast cancer.  In addition, 4 of the Scholars are Advocates in Science who ensure that the unique perspectives of those affected by breast cancer are fully integrated into decisions at every step of the research process.
