Results were announced by Pfizer on Friday that two randomized trials with the angiogenesis inhibitor Sunitinib did not result in an improvement in treatment results for women with metastatic breast cancer. These studies, in conjunction with the results from a previous trial, likely mean that Sunitinib will not be evaluated further in women with HER2 negative breast cancer. At this time, the only drug that inhibits blood vessel growth (angiogenesis inhibition) around breast tumors is bevacizumab (Avastin). There are many unanswered questions about angiogenesis inhibitors in women with breast cancer and additional trials with bevacizumab as well as other angiogenesis inhibitors are ongoing.
