The Discovery Health Channel Medical Honors First Ever Televised Event of Its Kind for the Medical Community
DALLAS - June 24, 2004 - The Komen Foundation and 10 other health care organizations partnered with the Discovery Health Channel to celebrate the achievements of individual health care providers, medical institutions and clinical researchers who have made remarkable discoveries and lifesaving contributions to various fields of medicine.
Each of the 13 honorees was nominated by one of 11 partner organizations involved and 13 total awards were presented, including Komen Foundation nominees Walter Churchill Willett, M.D., Dr. P.H., of Harvard University's Department of Nutrition in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Mina J. Bissell, Ph.D., distinguished scientist in the Life Sciences Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California, both of whom were Foundation 2003 Brinker Award winners. Honoree confirmations were made by the event's Advisory Board, which includes high-ranking public health officials as well as leaders from academia and the medical community.
The inaugural Discovery Health Channel Medical Honors is an unprecedented Hollywood-style awards show in association with the National Health Museum. The two-hour event, hosted by famed TV personality and talk show host Regis Philbin, will be broadcast on July 8 on the Discovery Health Channel.
