Nancy Brinker inspires BU graduates, receives honorary degree

May 16, 2006 - Nancy Goodman Brinker, founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, delivered the Boston University (BU) baccalaureate service address on May 14 to kick off the institution's formal commencement events. Her inspirational and deeply personal speech centered on how every individual can shape their community, their country and, indeed, the world.

During her speech, Brinker drew on the experience of losing her only sister, Susan G. Komen, to breast cancer, and her success in building the Komen Foundation into a global leader in the fight against the disease. She shared the inspirational lessons of her personal journey, including the importance of living your passion, the power of a single individual to make a difference and the imperative of personal integrity.

Following the baccalaureate service, Brinker attended the BU commencement ceremony, during which she received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. CBS Corporation president and CEO Leslie Moonves delivered the commencement address.
