The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Opens Call for Minority Advisory Council Nominations
Councils Instrumental in Addressing Breast Cancer Disparities Including Mortality and Morbidity Ratios, Treatment Access
DALLAS - September 26, 2006 -The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the nation's leading private source of funding for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment, is accepting nominations for new members to serve on three minority advisory councils. The councils seeking nominations include the African American National Advisory Council (AANAC), the National Hispanic/Latina Advisory Council (NHLAC) and the Asian American and Pacific Islander National Advisory Council (AAPINAC). Komen's Native American National Advisory Council was inaugurated in June and will seek nominations for new members in 2008.
Advisory council members serve on a volunteer basis for a period of three years.
Advisory councils provide crucial input and guidance
The advisory councils are instrumental in the Komen Foundation's efforts to reduce disparities in breast cancer mortality and morbidity among U.S. minority populations. Members of the advisory councils provide crucial input and guidance in multiple areas of the Komen Foundation's mission, including patient advocacy, messaging and education, program planning, partnerships, grants funding, research priorities and volunteer opportunities.
Advisory council membership
Total membership on each advisory council is no less than 11 members, including the chairperson. To be considered for inclusion on any of the councils, candidates must demonstrate knowledge of breast cancer and an understanding of cultural nuances and issues relating to a specific ethnic group. A minimum of two years of experience in breast health/breast cancer outreach and/or education, either professionally or on a volunteer basis, is required. Relevant background experience can include involvement in community outreach, research, academia, health education, communications, business, health care, government and public policy. Breast cancer survivors are encouraged to apply.
Completed nomination materials must arrive no later than 5:00 p.m. (CST) on Friday, November 10, 2006 at the Komen Foundation headquarters:

The new minority advisory council members will be chosen by December 2006 and their term of service will begin in April 2007.
