The American Association for Cancer Research to Hold 100th Anniversary Meeting
April 13, 2007 - The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) will hold its 100th anniversary meeting April 14 through 18 in Los Angeles. More than 17,000 attendees from around the globe are scheduled to attend the conference where scientists and researchers will present the latest cancer news and information.
Members of Susan G. Komen for the Cure's health sciences team will be reporting from the meeting, where topics of particular interest to breast cancer patients, survivors, advocates, researchers and physicians are expected to include developments in lifestyle and diet and cancer, microenvironment research, metastasis, cancer stem cells, and the immune system/inflammation's role in cancer generation and progression. The Komen for the Cure website, www.komen.org, will issue a post-conference summary of highlights.
Presentation of awards
Susan G. Komen for the Cure founder Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker will be presented with the AACR Centennial Medal for Distinguished Public Service on Sunday, April 15. In addition, Komen for the Cure board member LaSalle D. Leffall, Jr., M.D., will receive the AACR Public Service Award for his leadership in the fight against cancer through excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, patient care and public service. Past Susan G. Komen for the Cure Brinker Award for Scientific Distinction winner Mina J. Bissell, Ph.D., Distinguished Scientist, Life Sciences Division, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California., will receive the 2007 Pezcoller Foundation-AACR International Award for Cancer Research for her pioneering work in understanding the roles and inter-relationships of the tumor microenvironment, the extracellular matrix, and three-dimensional architecture in cell in cancer biology.
