Promise Me: How a Sister’s Love Launched the Global Movement to End Breast Cancer tells the story of two sisters, Nancy G. Brinker and Susan G. Komen, their loving bond from childhood through adulthood, the cancer that took one sister’s life and threatened the other’s, and the Promise between them that launched the global breast cancer movement, transforming and saving the lives of millions of women.
Brinker ignited the global breast cancer movement 28 years ago by promising Susan, who died at age 36 of the disease, that she would put an end to the shame, pain, fear and hopelessness caused by breast cancer. In 1982, with a handful of dedicated friends, Brinker founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure in her sister’s memory.
A year after creating the organization, she started the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® series, the most successful series of 1k/5k walks and runs for charity. Additionally, she pioneered cause-related marketing, which has enabled millions of people from all walks of life to join the fight against breast cancer. To date, Komen for the Cure has invested more than $1.5 billion into breast cancer research, awareness, education and support programs, playing a role in every major advance in breast cancer research and treatment. Komen is today the world’s largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer.
Said Diane Salvatore, Vice President, Publisher, Broadway Books, “We are deeply honored to be bringing Nancy G. Brinker’s inspiring story of unwavering determination and optimism to a broad readership, and we hope that the Promise Me/For My Sister campaign will help spread the message, one person at a time, of how important it is that we continue to combat this disease.”
