Grants Also Seek to Speed Research Breakthroughs to Bedside Care
DALLAS – September 17, 2009 – To improve the care that cancer patients receive, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has awarded two grants totaling $200,000 to the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and the ONS Foundation to find ways to fill the gaps in education as well as to support the development of new knowledge.
“Oncology nurses are usually the most closely involved medical professionals in the day-to-day care of women and men with breast cancer, and they are a tremendous resource for helping to identify the issues involved in that care,” said Hala Moddelmog, president and CEO of Komen for the Cure. “This research will help us tap that enormous expertise, to identify ways to deliver even better care for people with this disease.”
One of the Komen grants to the ONS is designed to identify and address the gaps in oncology nursing curriculum as well as the knowledge gap between non-oncology nurses and nursing students caring for patients with cancer.
The second Komen grant will help fund breast cancer research sponsored by the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation. This grant will focus on one area vital to the oncology nursing profession and the delivery of quality cancer care: conducting research in understudied topic areas where gaps exist in the knowledge base of oncology nursing practice.
