“Exercise in Disguise” Global Phenomenon Aims to Raise $3 Million in 3 Years via Zumbathon® Charity Events, Special-Edition Zumba® Apparel to Fund Research Grant
MIAMI, FL – July 30, 2013 –
Global fitness leader Zumba is taking its “Party in Pink™” initiative to new heights with the announcement of the Zumba Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention, the first ever medical research grant named for the Zumba program toward preventative research. For a three-month period (Aug. 1-Oct. 31) in each of the next three years, Zumba Fitness aims to raise $3 million to help fund this leading-edge research to prevent breast cancer before it starts, in partnership with Susan G. Komen.
Since 2010, more than $3 million has been raised via the “Party in Pink™” initiative and the combined efforts of Zumba Fitness, its global network of licensed Instructors and Zumba fans. All “Party in Pink™” funds raised through Zumbathon® charity events (Zumba classes for charity) and sales of special-edition apparel and accessories will be directed to Komen in support of the Zumba® Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention.
“Everything about the Zumba experience is personal—from the decision to take that first class; to the relationships that grow between participants and their instructors; to the joy, happiness and improved quality of life that flows through the families of every class participant,” said Alberto Perlman, CEO and co-founder of Zumba Fitness. “So it is fitting that we’ve taken steps to make our ‘Party in Pink™’mission more personal and specifically focused on prevention, which in turn benefits everyone in every nation. By helping to fund research for a preventative solution to this critical disease, it is our hope that we will be able to touch—and ultimately save—millions of more lives.”
The Zumba Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention will fund a study that will evaluate the effects of the lignan found in flaxseed on pre-menopausal women as a safe, low-cost, highly accessible solution to help prevent breast cancer on a global scale. The study, administered by Komen, will be led by an interdisciplinary team of renowned scientists at the University of Kansas Medical Center and the University of Texas at Austin, and will include cutting-edge pre-clinical studies and a multi-center clinical trial in the prevention of breast cancer.
“Population studies have indirectly linked flaxseed intake with reduced breast cancer incidence,” said Brian Petroff, PhD, Associate Professor at the University of Kansas and one of the principal investigators on this study. “Preclinical work suggests that SDG—an anti-oxidant —is a critical active component of flaxseed that provides benefit to breast cancer, so we are incredibly excited about the potential of SDG as a dietary cancer prevention agent. Through the Zumba® Global Research Grant, we now are working to definitively test this very attractive agent and learn its mechanisms of action—knowledge which could promote use of SDG for women at elevated breast cancer risk.“
Zumba Fitness will donate 75 percent of ticket sales from “Party in Pink™” Zumbathon charity classes and 30 percent of the sales of limited-edition “Party in Pink™” Zumba wear and accessories—including Zumba’s popular and iconic cargo pants, t-shirts, tanks and rubber bracelets. All funds collected through Zumba’s “Party in Pink™” charity campaign will be donated directly to Komen to support the Zumba Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention, with absolutely no administration fees from Komen or Zumba Fitness.
“Regular exercise is associated with reduced breast cancer risk, so we’ve been delighted to benefit from Zumba Fitness’ popular and fun ‘Party in Pink™’ campaign,” said Chandini Portteus, chief mission officer for Susan G. Komen. “Now, through the Zumba Global Research Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention, Zumba Fitness is taking its commitment to new heights by funding research that could bring us closer to scientifically sound breast cancer risk-reduction strategies.”
The “Party in Pink™” campaign is part of Zumba’s fundraising arm, “Zumba® Love: Movin’ for Charity,” which advances global charitable causes by celebrating the joy of giving through dance, fitness, friendship and love. Since its inception, Zumba Love has raised more than $7 million for charities, including Komen ® and its global nonprofit partners; the American Heart Association®; the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s “Augie's Quest”; and more.
