Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Names Ellen D. Willmott to General Counsel Post

DALLAS – June 6, 2012 – Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, today announced the appointment of Ellen D. Willmott to lead Komen’s legal team as general counsel.

Willmott will join Komen June 18 from Save the Children USA, where as vice president and general counsel, she oversaw legal matters for Save the Children’s domestic operations and international partnerships.

“Ellen is a highly regarded attorney whose experience at one of the most respected foundations in the world will serve Komen exceptionally well,” said Komen President Elizabeth Thompson. “She is widely known as an expert in the intricacies of global partnerships and growth, and as an outstanding steward in terms of regulatory compliance and partnership issues. We are delighted to welcome her to the Komen team.”

Willmott joined the Save the Children legal staff in 1996 and was appointed Vice President and General Counsel in 2011. During her tenure, she oversaw legal issues related to the transformation of Save the Children’s international operations, and established Save the Children USA’s cause-related marketing compliance program.

She has testified before House and Senate committees advocating for regulations to ensure safety and security of those providing international humanitarian and development assistance. She is a founding member of the International NGO General Counsel’s Forum and a member of the Advisory Council, Charity and Security Network.

Willmott received her Juris Doctor in 1990 from the University of Connecticut and is a 1985 graduate of the University of Rhode Island. She served as an associate at the Ignal & Vogel and John C. Peters & Associates law firms in Connecticut before joining Save the Children. She will relocate to Komen’s headquarters in Dallas from her home in Norwalk, CT.

“I’m honored to be joining an organization that, without question, has made huge progress against breast cancer, improving the lives of millions of women worldwide,” Willmott said. “I’m very much looking forward to working with the talented and dedicated people of this organization, and helping to fulfill Komen’s promise to end breast cancer, forever.”

Willmott’s duties will include oversight of regulatory compliance, international and domestic partnerships. She succeeds Komen’s interim general counsel, Mark Solls, who is returning to private practice.

“We are very thankful to Mark for his exceptional work, and his willingness to fulfill this role for Komen during our search to fill the general counsel’s position permanently,” Thompson said.
