DALLAS – June 9, 2009 –
Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is saddened to learn of the passing of Norman Brinker, a life-time board member of the organization. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
As the former husband of Komen for the Cure’s founding chair, Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, he played an invaluable role, not only in the start of the organization as founding board member , but also in our continued work to end breast cancer forever globally as a life-long champion of the cause. He has served on the Susan G. Komen for the Cure board since our founding in 1982.
“The world lost a great man in the passing of Norman Brinker,” said Ambassador Brinker. “Norman was one of the savviest business and philanthropic leaders of our time, and I, along with the entire Susan G. Komen for the Cure family, am indebted to him for the wise counsel, sage advice, mentoring and support he provided in helping to turn my promise to my sister into a global movement that has supported and saved the lives of millions.”
Norman Brinker was chairman emeritus of Brinker International, a restaurant group that includes Chili's Grill & Bar and Romano's Macaroni Grill, among others. Brinker began his career in the restaurant industry in 1957 with Jack-In-The-Box. He established Steak and Ale restaurants in 1965. Steak and Ale merged with Pillsbury in 1976, and in 1982, he became president of the Pillsbury Restaurant Group, overseeing such restaurants as Steak and Ale, Burger King and Bennigan's. In 1983, he invested in and became chairman and CEO of Chili's, Inc., now known as Brinker International.
About Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure®, we have invested more than $1.3 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
