Affiliate NewsThe New Orleans Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded in 1992 by Patricia C. Denechaud and the late Dr. Merv Trail. Now in its 13th year, the Affiliate has grown tremendously and hosts numerous annual events to raise awareness and funds for breast health issues.
In March 2004, New Orleans was selected as the National Kick-Off Site for the BMW Ultimate Drive Series. The Affiliate held a party at the New Orleans Museum of Art to celebrate the event and recognized local Peake BMW owners Martin and Mimi Peake for their longtime support of the BMW Ultimate Drive and Komen for the Cure.
In July, the Affiliate celebrated the 4th Annual Chefs Summer Cure Wine Dinner at which local chefs and wine importers came together to host a gourmet dinner for 200 at the Windsor Court Hotel. At the evening's end, guests bid in a live auction to have their favorite chefs create a once-in-a-lifetime private dinner party for eight. After a spirited bidding war over the chefs, which resulted in a 60 percent increase in donations over last year's event, the sold-out evening ended with a dessert course and smiles on the faces of the guests who enjoyed a memorable six-course meal for a great cause.
Salute to Survivors LuncheonOn September 9, 2005, some 400 guests, including 150 survivors, will join the Annual Salute to Survivors Luncheon. This event recognizes all survivors and honors our Support Angel of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and Survivor of the Year for their outstanding contributions and the outstanding way they demonstrate the values and mission of Komen. Birdhouses painted by such noted individuals as Oprah Winfrey and Former First Lady Barbara Bush, as well as local artists, will be auctioned for the cause.
Komen New Orleans Race For The Cure®The 10th anniversary Komen New Orleans Race for the Cure® will take place October 2, 2005. The 2004 Race had over 6,500 registrants, and we hope to host over 10,000 walkers and runners at this year's race. The historic Bayou St. John course takes our participants through beautiful City Park and its majestic live oaks, and out of the park for a breathtaking race along the banks of Bayou St. John. A New Orleans-style post-race celebration will follow the Race, including a survivor's celebration, Race awards, a Kids' Tent, "tastes of New Orleans" from many area restaurants, and music and fun for all.
Local Grants ProgramThe Komen New Orleans Affiliate is proud of our volunteer base and network. Through the hard work of our many educational outreach efforts, we have seen firsthand the need for breast health education, screening, guidance, and support in our service area. The Komen New Orleans Affiliate services a seven parish area, which includes an extremely large and diverse population.
The Affiliate is also privileged to have Komen Research and Award Grant recipients working within our service area. This unique combination of both national and local grant recipients serves us well, enabling us to offer the very best possible research, education, screening, and treatment in New Orleans and the surrounding parishes within our service area.
Other Upcoming EventsUpcoming events for the New Orleans Affiliate include Pack the Place in Pink Night with our NBA team, the New Orleans Hornets, and the Saints Mini-Camp for Women.
We at the New Orleans Affiliate are proud to be part of the Komen network and its many volunteers who make possible the projects we fund, both locally and nationally.
