History of the Elmira AffiliateThe Komen Elmira Affiliate was born in 1989 through the efforts of Dawn Marie Castellana and esteemed Gynecologist Dr. Nancy King. When 28-year-old LPGA Golf Pro Heather Farr was diagnosed with breast cancer, Dawn Marie and a group of dedicated women saw her story as an opportunity to showcase women's health issues in the Southern Tier of New York. During the LPGA Corning Classic, they joined forces with local hospitals, setting up displays at the annual tournament. Our Affiliate works consistently to reduce barriers in education, and we have seen a decrease in breast cancer death in the Elmira, NY area due to early detection.
The Komen Race in Elmira, NYWhen we started the Elmira Affiliate, most Race for the Cure® events were held in larger city venues, but dedication and perseverance brought the Race to Elmira in 1989 as the Komen Twin Tiers Race for the Cure®. The Affiliate's Board of Directors has been an integral part of the Twin Tiers Race's success. For the first three years, the Race was held at the Arnot Mall in Horseheads, NY.
As the number of participants increased, it moved to downtown Elmira, NY, the move coinciding with our partnership with our presenting sponsor, Chemung Canal Trust Company.
Mission Program & GrantsThe Affiliate receives Regional Grant applications from a nine-county area. An educated committee screens them and awards grants based on demonstrated need. At one time, we could serve all requests, but with extended outreach and growth, that is no longer possible.
In 2005, the Elmira Affiliate awarded $60,472.00, assisting the following organizations:
Looking to the FutureOf the Elmira Affiliate's future, Dr. Nancy King, Director Emeritus, has said, "we would like to see our Affiliate become recognized as an instant place for instant information regarding all areas of breast cancer assistance, a place to procure funding for outreach and education, and an organization where every woman in the Twin Tiers feels they can get the testing and treatment that will increase their survival chances in their fight with breast cancer."
During the coming years, the Elmira Affiliate wants to continue to honor the survivors, the warriors who are actively fighting to eradicate breast cancer in our lifetime.
