The Komen Eastern Washington Affiliate is one of the newer Affiliates in the Komen network. This spring, the Affiliate will fulfill a dream 10 years in the making when it hosts its first Komen Race for the Cure® on April 30.
The seeds for the Eastern Washington Affiliate were planted when Susan G. Komen for the Cure received two separate inquiries in 1995, one from the Inland Northwest Women's Health Network and one from Mary Beth Nethercutt. Both expressed the desire to bring a Komen Race for the Cure® to Eastern Washington. A collaborative process began to establish an organization to serve the nine counties of Eastern Washington, and the Eastern Washington Affiliate was officially recognized in 2003.
Community OutreachWhile the goal to host a Komen Race for the Cure® remained a priority, the Eastern Washington Affiliate quickly established itself within its service territory with an aggressive educational outreach. The Affiliate's Education Committee has been present at more than 30 events each year since it was formed. Although the primary population base for the Affiliate resides in Spokane and Spokane County, the organization works hard to be visible and to fund breast cancer outreach in the more rural counties of its service area. In the past two years, the Eastern Washington Affiliate has provided grants to fund programs that reach all nine counties in its territory.
Laughter is the Best MedicineIn 2005, the Eastern Washington Affiliate held its First Annual Laugh for the Cure®. Our Affiliate was the second in the country to host this event, which was a tremendous success. With ticket sales booming, we added another 100 seats and still sold out. The Second Annual Laugh for the Cure® is scheduled for January 26, 2006.
The Race is OnThe Eastern Washington Affiliate's first Komen Race for the Cure® will take place on April 30, 2006, in downtown Spokane, and tremendous community support is already evident. This year, our Affiliate was selected as the Official Bloomsday Charity. The Komen Eastern Washington Race for the Cure® will serve as the last official qualifying race for Bloomsday in 2006.
Upcoming EventsAnother first for 2005 is the Eastern Washington Affiliate's first Lunch for the Cure®, to be held November 10 at the Red Lion Inn at the Park in downtown Spokane. The Lunch promises to be an uplifting celebration honoring breast cancer survivors.
We at the Eastern Washington Affiliate are passionate about breast cancer education, screening, research and treatment. We embrace Komen's mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. And we are proud to be part of the Komen Affiliate Network.
