In 1991, 500 people gathered in Nashville's Centennial Park for the first Komen Nashville Race for the Cure®. The Greater Nashville Affiliate was formed in 1997 by the Junior League of Nashville. Since then, the Affiliate has worked hard to have a positive impact on the nine counties in its service area. The Race is still the primary fundraiser, growing from 4,000 participants in 1999 to 7000 participantsin 2005. In 2006, our impact continues to grow during one of the busiest springs we can remember!
Women of Country Music Signature Show at the Grand Ole Opry
When most people think of Nashville, Tennessee, they think of country music. Nashville is the home of the Grand Ole Opry and many country music stars. On March 17, the Komen Nashville Affiliate was honored to be recognized by the Grand Ole Opry at their Women of Country Music Signature Event. Featured artists were Carrie Underwood, hot off her American Idol win, Lorrie Morgan and Vince Gill, who filled in for Lee Ann Womack at the last minute.
As the first charity recipient at a Signature Concert Event, the Greater Nashville Affiliate provided pink bracelets and educational materials to the 4,000+ in attendance at two different shows. In addition to VIP seats( what a treat!) the Affiliate received proceeds from an online auction conducted by the Grand Ole Opry.
Ride for the Cure®
The Clarksville Cycling Club held their 1st Annual Ride for the Cure on May 6. With over 360 riders participating, it was an incredibly successful and fun inaugural event.
Rhapsody in Pink and AWEAR
The Greater Nashville Affliate was also honored this spring to be the recipient of proceeds from ticket sales for a runway show called Rhapsody in Pink put on by students from Vanderbilt University on April 13. Models wore fashions from Betsey Johnson, TIBI and LaRok, among others.
Additionally, the Eighth Annual AWEAR Fashion Show by students from O'More College of Design, May 11, featured students modeling fashions they designed. The show's partnership with the Greater Nashville Affiliate increases awareness of the risks and realities of breast cancer.
Komen Race for the Cure
The 15th anniversary Greater Nashville Affiliate Raceis scheduled for Saturday, November 4, at the Bicentennial Mall State Park— a new venue! Our new logo welcomes Race participants to Music City, USA.
The Affiliate's largest Volunteer Recruitment Fair was held March 2, with 100+ volunteers attending. The Fair provided volunteers with information about the history of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Affiliate, mission and core valuesand a brochure listing various volunteer opportunities. Volunteers mingled with Affiliate representatives to learn more about their areas of interest. The Nashville Affiliate schedules volunteer recruitment sessions throughout the year, but this was the first time we held an organized, targeted recruitment effort, and it truly made a difference.
We must always remember that Volunteers are not paid— not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.
