arrow bulletOVERVIEW

On Thursday, September 18, 2014, Honoring the Promise will bring together the heroes of the breast cancer movement for a celebratory evening of inspiration and world-class entertainment. Honoring the Promise both celebrates and recognizes the Komen community of survivors and supporters who share in the promise Nancy G. Brinker made to her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, to end breast cancer forever.

Susan G. Komen® has sustained a strong commitment to supporting research that will identify and deliver cures for breast cancer. To date, $23 million has gone to 98 research grants to researchers in the National Capital Region, including Georgetown University, The Institute of Medicine, Howard University and George Washington University, among others.

Why Your Help Matters
The National Capital Region, which includes Washington, D.C. and surrounding areas in Maryland and Virginia, has the highest incidence and mortality rates for breast cancer in the United States, with incidence rates 20 percent higher than the national average and mortality rates nearly 40 percent higher than the national average. In addition, it has one of the highest rates of late-stage diagnosis of breast cancer.

Despite these alarming numbers, we are making progress. Breast cancer incidence, mortality and the number of late-stage diagnoses have been declining in the National Capital Region. Services and assistance provided by local programs and funded by Honoring the Promise are contributing to these reductions.

Your Impact
Since 1990, funds raised from Susan G. Komen® events like Honoring the Promise have provided more than $34 million for over 300 community grants to local programs in the National Capital Region that are dedicated to reaching low-income, minority and uninsured women in areas where breast cancer rates are highest.

Your Support Provides Services and Funding to Research Grants
Funds raised from Susan G. Komen's Honoring the Promise event go to the National Capital Region community grants. These grants are awarded to not-for-profit organizations to provide breast health services, treatment assistance and patient support services to low-income, minority and under- or uninsured women.
