Susan G. Komen for the Cure's Austin Affiliate serves a five-county area in and around Austin, Texas, a city known for its great people, easygoing lifestyle and live music scene. In 2005, the Affiliate funded programs in each of those five counties.
Racing for the Cure and staying top of mind
Most of the Affiliate's money comes from the local Komen Race for the Cure®, which takes place each year on the first Sunday in November. At 21,000 participants, it is the largest race in Austin-no small feat in a city where running is a favorite pastime and any weekend might host a race! The Race takes place downtown, on a scenic course that passes by the State Capitol. Last year, the Austin Mayor and the University of Texas Women's Basketball team came out to support the cause.
Third-party events also help raise funds and drive awareness. The BMW Ultimate Drive(TM) and Saks Key to the Cure(TM) along with many other events hosted by local businesses help keep the Komen Austin Affiliate top of mind throughout the year.
Educating our community
The Affiliate's education programs are making a difference in the community. In the past year, Affiliate representatives attended more than 300 health fairs and community events and spread the word to approximately 20,000 people about early detection and breast health. Recently, the Affiliate's Community Outreach Manager spearheaded an effort to get information to a very under-served community-migrant workers from Mexico and Latin America.
Growing with Austin
The Austin Affiliate's success is a tribute to its dedicated staff, amazing volunteers, generous corporate sponsors and creative media sponsors. The community has embraced Komen for the Cure's mission. We look forward to continuing to grow with Austin!
